What is a strong acid?
A strong acid releases all of its hydrogen atoms into solution as ions and completely dissociate in an aqueous solution
What is a weak acid?
Only releases a small proportion of its available hydrogen atoms as ions and only partially dissociate in aqueous solution
What are some examples of bases?
Metal oxide, metal hydroxide, metal carbonate, ammonia NH3
What is an alkali?
A base that dissolves in water releasing hydroxide ions into solution
Metal oxide plus acid equals
Salt plus water
Acid plus carbonate equals
Salt plus water plus carbon dioxide
What is a standard solution?
A solution known of known concentration
How do you prepare a standard solution?
Weigh the solid accurately Dissolve in a beaker in less distilled water than needed to fill the volumetric flask Transfer solution to volume metric flask rinse any traces with distilled water And fill to the graduation line by adding distilled water a drop at the time until the bottom of the meniscus lines up exactly with the mark Invert the flask slowly several times to mix the solution thoroughly
What do concordant tirtres mean?
Within 0.10 cm3 of each other
What is the oxidation number of group 1 element?
+1
What is the oxidation number of group 2 elements?
+2
What is the oxidation number of group 3 elements?
+3
What is the oxidation number of fluorine?
Negative one
What is the oxidation number of hydrogen?
+1 except in metal hydrides where it is negative one
What is the oxidation number of oxygen?
-2 except in peroxides where it is negative one and when bonded to fluorine where it is +2
What is the oxidation number of chlorine?
Negative one except when bonded to fluorine or oxygen
What is reduction?
The gain of electrons or removal of oxygen or a decrease in oxidation number
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons or the addition of oxygen or an increase in oxidation number
Metal plus acid equals
Salt plus hydrogen
