Card preview (15)
Male repro system
-produce male sex hormones (testis) -develop male gametes (sperm) in the testis -the epididymis stores and concentrates the spermatozoa -deliver spermatozoa to the female system at the appropriate time
Testes
-found outside abdominal cavity in the scrotum in adults -spermatogenesis -hormone production
Scrotum
-sperm develop at temperatures < body temp -the cremaster muscle adjusts the location of the testes
Testis Development
cryptorchidism (testicle not ascended, typically only 1 testi)
Spermatoegenesis
Occurs in seminiferous tubules of testes -testis is like a ball of string-the seminiferous tubules is the string
Spermatocytes- spermatids-speramatozoa
-sertoli cells nourish developing spermatids -spermatozoa stored in epididymis as they mature -large numbers of spermatozoa constantly produced
Testis
-interstitial cells produce testosterone -responsible for development of secondary male sex characteristics -anabolic steroid hormone (protein building)
Spermatozoa
-head, midpiece and long narrow tail -acrosome: cap over the nucleus contains enzymes that help penetrate the ovum -midpiece: lots of mitochondria to produce energy for mobility
spermatic cord
-contains the blood vessels, nerves and lymphatics and the vas deferens -the vas deferens is the tube that connects the testicle with the urethra
spermatozoa travel from _____________ via the _____________ to the _________
epididymis …… vas deferens……. urethra
-along the way they pass the accessory glands, add various fluids containing nutrients and buffers to keep spermatozoa alive, active and happy on their journey what are the accessory glands?
seminal vesicles, prostate glands, bulbourethral gland
sperm + accessory gland=________
semen
3 accessory glands, what are they
1 prostate gland, 2 seminal vesicles, 2 bulbourethral (cowpers) gland
Spermatic Cord
-contains the blood vessels, nerves and lymphatics and the vas deferens -the vas deferens is the tube that connects the testicle with the urethra
Penis Structures
-fibroelastic penis- sigmoid flexure, straightens upon erection, allows for extension- bull ram, boar -Vascular- increased blood flow causes erection e.g. stallion
