reuse
to refill and/or find another use for a product without processing it (other than cleaning)
recycle
to reprocess materials into new and useful products
recycling pros and cons
pros: - reduces landfill waste - saves energy - reduces the demand for raw materials cons: - not all items are recyclable - recycling costs a lot of money - if items are not washed properly it can become contaminated
incineration pros and cons
pros: - heat used to burn materials can be used to produce energy - reduces waste going to landfill - some ash/waste products can be used for construction of roads cons: - produces GHGs/air pollution - encourages waste as a constant supply is needed to burn
SEPA role in waste management
• working with other organisations to achieve the objectives of zero waste plan • regulating waste management activities: landfill, incinerators, export of waste, WEEE & batteries, collecting & interpreting waste data, and tackling environmental crime
