testes are the site of:
Gamete production in the seminiferous tubules Testosterone production in the interstitial cells
Functions of testosterone:
Stimulates sperm production Activates prostate gland Activates the seminal vesicles
Accessory glands
Prostate gland and Seminal vesicles secrete fluids that maintain the mobility and viability of the sperm
Prostate gland
Secretes lubricating liquid containing enzymes, these enzymes maintain the fluid at optimum viscosity for sperm mobility
Seminal vesicles
Secretes a liquid rich in fructose (energy source) and prostaglandins to stimulate contractions of the female reproductive tract
Gamete production in females
The ova is produced by the ovary. Each immature ovum is surrounded by a follicle that protects the developing ovum and secretes oestrogen. Mature ova are released into the oviduct. After ovulation, the follicle develops into a corpus luteum which secretes the hormone progesterone.
Fertilisation
After ovulation, the nucleus of the ova can fuse with the nucleus of the sperm to form a diploid zygote in the oviduct.
