Chemical Structure?
The placement of atoms in a substance.
Chemical Bond?
A force that holds atoms and/or ions together.
Bond Length?
The length between 2 bonded atoms at their smallest potential energy; the average length between the nuclei of 2 bonded atoms.
Bond Angle?
The angle made by 2 bonds to the same atom.
Hydrogen bond?
The intermolecular force happening when a hydrogen atom that is bonded to a highly electronegative atom of 1 molecule is attracted to 2 unshared electrons of another molecule.
Ionic Bond?
A bond made by the attraction between oppositely charged ions.
Metallic Bond?
A bond made by the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons surrounding them.
Covalent Bond?
A bond made when atoms share 1 or more pairs of electrons.
Polyatomic Ion?
An ion formed with 1 or more atoms.
Formula Unit?
1 Na ion and 1 Cl ion.
Nonpolar Covalent Bond?
When bonds of an atom are shared equally.
Polar Covalent Bond?
When bonds of an atom are not shared equally.
Empirical Formula?
Tells the smallest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound.
Molecular formula?
Tells how many atoms are in 1 molecule of a compound.
Organic Compound?
Covalently bonded compound formed of molecules.
Polymer?
Large molecule formed by more than 5 monomers or small units.
Carbohydrate?
Made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and provides nutrients to a cell.
Protein?
Made up of 1 or more chains of amino acids.
Hydrocarbon?
Made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms.
Alkane?
When more than 3 bonded carbon atoms don’t line up in a row.
Alkene?
At least 1 double covalent bond between carbon atoms.
DNA?
Determines the genetic makeup.
Amino Acid?
Contains carboxylate and an amino acid and combines to form proteins.
