What can the pH scale show us?
How acidic or alkaline a substance is.
What is the opposite of an acid?
Bases
What is the difference between a base and an alkali?
Many bases are insoluble - they do not dissolve in water. However, if a base does dissolve in water, we also call it an alkali. All alkalis are bases, but only soluble bases are alkalis.
What does pH stand for?
Power of hydrogen.
The pH scale goes from 0-14, what do the numbers mean?
pH 7 is neutral pH, anything under 7 is acidic and anything over 7 is basic.
The pH scale is logarithmic, what does this mean?
Every whole value below 7 is 10 times more acidic than the higher value, and every whole value above 7 is 10 times less acidic that the lower value. (For example, a pH of 2 is 10 times more acidic than a pH of 3 and 100 times more acidic than a pH of 4.)
In science what is an indicator?
Chemicals that react with other chemicals to change colour. An indicator, by its colour change can tell us the type of chemical we are dealing with.
What are the indicators we use in Broxburn science?
pH paper and universal indicator.
What colour will a strong acid turn pH paper?
Red
What colour will a strong base turn universal indicator?
Purple
What colour will water with a pH of 7 turn pH paper?
Green
What colour will a weak acid turn universal indicator?
Yellow
What colour will a weak base turn pH paper?
Dark green
What can you use to make your own indicator?
Red cabbage, red onion or turmeric spice.
