What do the atrioventricular valves do?
Prevent backflow of blood into atria when ventricles contract
Why do ventricles have thicker muscular walls than atria?
So they can create enough force when they contract to push blood out of heart through arteries

Allows it to contract with more force & push blood at a higher pressure out through aorta to whole body, whereas right ventricle only need blood to travel short distance to lungs
