Double Refraction
When you look in a mineral and it appears to be doubled.
Translucent
Allowing light, but not detailed shapes, to pass through
Opaque
not able to be seen through
Striations
A series of closely placed parallel lines or grooves on either crystal faces or cleavage planes
Cleavage
When a mineral breaks in smooth, even planes. Along the weak points in it’s atomic structure.
Waxy/Resinous
resembling wax in consistency or appearance
Brittle
hard but liable to break or shatter easily
Flexible
capable of bending easily without breaking.
Magnetism
attractive and repulsive forces between objects.
Crystal Form
The external shape a mineral takes
Specific Gravity/Density
Ratio of mineral weight to the weight of an equal volume of water
Fracture
When breaking occurs along uneven, curved or irregular surfaces in no direction
Fluorescence
Minerals that glow when exposed to ultraviolet light
Non-metallic
Minerals that reflect light like other substances than metal
Earthy/Dull
Minerals that exhibit little to no luster
Pearly
resembling a pearl in luster or color.
Elastic
Bends but returns it’s original form when pressure is released.
Vitreous
like glass in appearance or physical properties
Transparent
When a mineral transmit both light and an image through it
Glassy
A mineral that resembles glass
Sectile
Can be cut into thin, curved shavings with a knife
Color
How the human eye observes the varieties of wavelengths of visible light.
Malleable
Can be hammered out into thin sheets
Metallic
Minerals that reflect light like metal
