What are minerals made up of?
Some are made up of single elements. Others are made up of a compound of two or more elements
4 RULES For MINERALS
• Naturally occurring Formed in nature • Inorganic (has NOT been made by or composed of life forms) • Uniform in composition Same throughout • Crystalline or solid Be solid or have a crystal structure
Composition of Earth’s Crust (RTESS 1)
• Minerals are composed of elements and/or compounds. • Over 99% of minerals are made up of only a few elements (~ 812) • On ESRT p. 1 Oxygen: most abundant element in the crust by mass Silicon: second most abundant by mass Make up common group of rocks & minerals known as Silicates.
Rocks vs. Minerals
All minerals are rocks, but not all rocks are minerals. Most rocks are not uniform (the same) in their composition, they are made up a mixture of many different minerals.
