What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction in which energy is given out which causes the surroundings to heat up.
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction in which energy is taken in from the surroundings causing the surroundings to cool.
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy the reactant particles need when they collide with each other in order to react.
Is energy needed to: break bonds or make bonds?
Energy is needed to break bonds. Energy is released when making bonds.
What are examples of reactions that are exothermic?
• combustion • neutralisation reactions • many oxidation reactions
what happens when bonds are broken?
energy is used (endothermic)
what happens when bonds are made?
energy is released (exothermic)
