#1
Front (Question)

Providing —— to a object will raise it’s ———–; however the —- of an object and the type of ——– also influence how much the temperature will increase by.

Back (Answer)

energy temperature mass material

#2
Front (Question)

Why does water in a mug reach a higher temperature than the pool?

Back (Answer)

As the energy provided increased the kinetic energy of fewer particles.

#3
Front (Question)

What is the Specific Heat Capacity?

Back (Answer)

The Specific Heat capacity of a substance is the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of that substance by 1 degree celsius. It also states how much energy would be released from 1kg of a substance as it cools down by 1 degree celsius.

#4
Front (Question)

Generally good thermal conductors have —– —— .

Back (Answer)

SHC values

#5
Front (Question)

What is the equation for energy, regarding SHC? Be able to rearrange this

Back (Answer)

ENERGY = MASS x SHC x TEMPERATURE CHANGE Energy- Joules Mass- KG SHC - J/kg/degree celsius Temp change - degrees celsius Mass = Energy / SHC x Temp change SHC = Energy / Mass x Temp change Temperature = Energy / mass x SHC

#6
Front (Question)

Write up the method for the Required Practical: Measuring Specific Heat Capcity

Back (Answer)

In this experiment, you will determine how much electrical energy is supplied to an electric heating element (E=ItV(Energy = (current x time) x Voltage) and transferred to a metal block, either Aluminium, Steel or Copper. Using the equation E = mxcxQ, you will be able to determine the specific heat capacity of the block. 1) Find the mass of the metal block, m, in kilograms 2) Wrap the block securely in an insulating material and stand the block on a heatproof mat. 3) Place the thermometer into the block’s small hole, and take the initial temperature of the block 4) Place the heating element into the block’s larger hole. Connect the heater in series with an ammeter and a 12V power supply. 5) Connect the voltmeter in parallel to the power supply 6) Switch on the heater and start the timer at the same time. Heat the block for ten minutes. 7) While the heating takes place, record the current value, I (from the ammeter) and the voltage value, V, from the voltmeter. 8) Once the heating time has elapsed, switch off the heater; monitor the thermometer, then record the highest temperature reached as the final temperature of the block. 9) Complete the calculation to find the Specific Heat Capacity of the block, c. SAFETY WARNING- The apparatus can get very hot in this experiment. Once the experiment has started, keep the heating element inside the block.

#7
Front (Question)

When energy is ——– to a substance and the temperature is not changing, the ——- is being used to —– the bonds that hold the substance together, therefore resulting in a —— – —–.

Back (Answer)

supplied energy break change of state

#8
Front (Question)

What is the SPECIFIC LATENT HEAT?

Back (Answer)

The Specific latent heat of a substance is the amount of energy needed to change the state of 1kg of the susbtance.

#9
Front (Question)

Each substance will have two different SLH values. One for…. One for….

Back (Answer)

One for melting/freezing and One for boiling/condensing

#10
Front (Question)

What is the Specific latent heat of fusion of a soild?

Back (Answer)

The specific latent heat of fusion of a solid is the amount of energy needed to MELT 1kg of the substance. It also states how much energy would be released from 1kg of a liquid as it freezes.

#11
Front (Question)

The greater the mass of the substance…

Back (Answer)

the more energy we need.

#12
Front (Question)

What is the Specific Latent heat of Vaporisation of a liquid?

Back (Answer)

The Specific Latent heat of Vaporisation of a liquid is the amount of energy needed to BOIL 1kg of the substance. It also states how much energy would be released from 1kg of a gas as it condenses.

#13
Front (Question)

REMEMBER- THERE IS NO ———— change when the —- – —— changes.

Back (Answer)

temperature state of matter

#14
Front (Question)

What is the equation for energy, regarding SLH?

Back (Answer)

ENERGY = MASS x SPECIFIC LATENT HEAT Energy - Joules Mass- Kg SLH- J/kg
