What is the equation of Cellular Respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6 O2 –> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + ATP
Cellular Respiration
The process in which cells release the energy that is stored in glucose (found in ALL organism)
Why isn’t photosynthesis enough?
Glucose isn’t usable energy, organisms need to convert food into usable energy (ATP)
Aerobic
Relating to, involving, or requiring free oxygen
Anaerobic
Relating to, involving, or requiring the abscence of free oxygen (also known as fermentation)
Glycolysis
In the cytoplasm, 6 carbon molecules is split in half making two 3-carbon/pyruvates (this is the first reactions for both aerobic and anaerobic)
Aerobic Respiraiton
The process of pyruvates diffusing into the mitochondria for further breakdown and energy extraction producing a lot of ATP (only happens if oxygen is available)
What are the results in Glycolysis during Aerobic respiration?
2 net gain of ATP, 2 NADH (carries hydrogen to mitochondria), 2 pyruvic acids (Only occurs if oxygen is present)
Cellular respiration (w/ oxygen) steps
Reactants (Glucose + Oxygen) –> glycolysis –> kreb cycle –> ETC (Electron Transport Chain) –> Carbon Dioxide + Water + 34 ATP
Krebs Cycle
In the mitochondria, pyruvates made from glycolysis enters the Krebs cycle to help produce carbon dioxide and 2 ATP energies
Electron Transport Chain
In the mitochondria, oxygen enters the ETC with the help of NADH and FADH2 producing water and 34 ATP
Lactic Acid Fermentation
Produced when muscle cells run out of oxygen (The goal is to empty electron carriers & allow glycolysis to continue)
Alcoholic Fermentation
Often used to create alcoholic beverages, it requires anaerobic conditions to allow glycolysis to continue which Ethonal is produced with carbon dioxide
Ethanol
A clear, colorless, highly flammable compound commonly produced by fermenting plant sugars
