Abiotic
Any resource in an ecosystem that is not living
Biotic
Resources in an ecosystem that are living
Autotroph
can produce its own food
Heterotroph
consumes another organism to get food/nutrients
Food Chains
Series of steps in which organisms transfer energy in one direction by eating and being eaten
Food Webs
Many food Chains put together where the arrows shows the direction of energy
Producer
Can make their own food in an ecosystem (eaten by primary consumer)
Primary Consumer
Animals that eat plants
Secondary Consumer
Organisms that consumes primary consumers (Omnivores)
Tertiary Consumers
Animals that eat secondary consumers (carnivores)
Limiting Factors
Anything that stops from the population from growing
Carrying Capacity
The maximum population size of a living biological species that can be sustained by its environment
Overshoots
When an environment exceeds the carrying capacity leading to death of organisms that live in that area
Carbon Cycle
The process of naturally reusing carbon atoms through cellular respiration which travels from the atmosphere into organisms in the earth and then back into the atmosphere before repeating
Symbiosis
Organisms of different species that live in the same area but are not competitive with one another
Mutualism
A relationship between two organisms where both benefit each other
Commensalism
A relationship that helps one organism and neither will it hurt or harm one another
Parasitism
A relationship the benefits one organism and harms the other
Introduced Species
Any species transported (intentionally or not) from its native habitat to an area where it did not exist
Invasive Species
An introduced Species that has a negative impact on the populations of the native species in its new environment
Niche
A environment where an organism lives and can find food, habitat, and mates (w/o it there is no diversity)
Biodiversity
The variety of life
Hybrids
Resulting from combining qualities of two organisms of different varieties, subspecies, species or genera through sexual reproduction
10% Rule
Only 10% of the entry available in one trophic level is transferred to the next higher level
