#1
Front (Question)

What is a biofuel

Back (Answer)

A fuel taken from any living or recently living organisms It can be made from waste vegetable oils or plants or from fermented sugar cane, straw, nutshells, and wood chip It is renewable and carbon neutral because the carbon can be recaptured by a new plant taking its place

#2
Front (Question)

What is nuclear power

Back (Answer)

Fuel that takes energy from unstable atoms that can split in two and energy is transferred when this happens. When this happens it becomes very hot and this energy is used to to turn turbines through steam generating electricity It can produce up to 10000 times the amount of energy as fossil fuels however is very hard to dispose of as toxic waste is very dangerous and doesn’t produce any green house gases

#3
Front (Question)

What is wind power

Back (Answer)

A wind turbine generates power using natural wind as wind increases so does the amount of energy produced However it can be unreliable depending on locations due to low winds sometimes and require large areas of land to be built and if built off shore can disrupt bird migration and marine life

#4
Front (Question)

What is wave power

Back (Answer)

Power generated through the movement of waves going up and down turning the generator producing electicity They need to withstand storms and cant always produce electricity cables and buildings are needed for the electricity to connect the electricity generated to the electricity grid and can ruin coastlines. They can also change tidal patterns and ruin marine life

#5
Front (Question)

What is hydroelectric power

Back (Answer)

Power generated through reservoirs as rain water is collected and flows downhill it drives turbines at the bottom of the hill generating electricity.to make a reservoir it takes lots of flooding large areas affecting local habitats but water can be reused

#6
Front (Question)

How is tidal power generated

Back (Answer)

A station traps water after high tide behind a barrage the eater is then released through turbines back to sea turning the generators

#7
Front (Question)

What are solar cells

Back (Answer)

Solar cells convert solar energy that they absorb into electricity and are connected to make solar panels They are expensive to manufacture but don’t cost anything to run and can be unreliable in some areas where the sun is often covered by clouds. Solar farms need a-lot of area to run and can affect habitats

#8
Front (Question)

W

Back (Answer)

#9
Front (Question)

What is solar heating

Back (Answer)

Mirrors surround a tower reflecting direct sunlight to cook or heat water generating electricity in a hot dry climate they can produce up to 20 MW of electrical power which is enough to power a few thousand homes

#10
Front (Question)

What is geothermal energy

Back (Answer)

Energy that is stored beneath the earth power stations can be built in volcanic area or where there are hot rocks deep below the surface. Water is pumped down to the rocks to produce steam driving turbines creating electricity It can also be used to heat homes as underfloor heating as its pumped

#11
Front (Question)

What are advantages of nuclear power

Back (Answer)

No green house gases are used More energy can be created then fossil fuels

#12
Front (Question)

What are disadvantages of Nuclear power

Back (Answer)

Radioactive waste is produced which has to be stored safely for centuries Nuclear reactors can be very dangerous if an explosion occurs as radioactive material is released effecting environments for a long time They are also very expensive to build and decommision

#13
Front (Question)

What are advantages of renewable energy

Back (Answer)

They will never run out as they can be replenished They don’t produce green house gases or acid rain They don’t create radioactive waste They can be used in places the electrical grid cant reach

#14
Front (Question)

What are disadvantages of renewable energy

Back (Answer)

Renewable energy resources are not able to currently meet the energy demand of the world They often need large areas of land destroying habitats Some renewable sources can be unreliable or aren’t available all the time They need specific locations to work
