What does gene expression involve?
Gene expression involves the transcription and translation of DNA sequences. Only a fraction of the genes in a cell are expressed
Describe the structure of RNA
RNA is single stranded. It is composed of nucleotides containing a ribose sugar, phosphate and base. The bases are adenine, uracil, guanine and cytosine.
mRNA
mRNA is transcribed from DNA in the nucleus and translated into proteins by ribosomes in the cytoplasm A group of 3 bases on the mRNA molecule form a codon and codes fot a specific amino acid
tRNA
tRNA (transfer RNA) folds due to complementary base pairing A group of 3 bases in tRNA forms an anticodon. A tRNA molecule has an anticodon at one end and an attachment site for a specific amino acid at the other end Each tRNA carries its specific amino acid to he ribosome
rRNA
Makes up the ribosome along with proteins
