Card preview (11)
Give the equation to work out volume from standard or room temperature and pressure
Volume (dm3) = moles x either 24 or 22.4 ( molar gas volume)
What is the molar gas volume
volume occupied by one mole of a gas at a specified temperature and pressure –> eg room temperature and pressure (rpt) or standard temperature and pressure (stp)
Why do we use the ideal gas equation
To work out the number of moles in a certain volume at any temperature or pressure
Give the ideal gas equation
pV = nRT
Give the units for each part of the ideal gas equation
Pressure - Pascals Volume - m3 number of moles - ( often need to do mass/mr) Gas constant - 8.31 JK-1mol-1 (given in data booklet) Temperature - Kelvin
How to convert from celsius to kelvin
+ 273
How to convert from tonnes to grams
X by one million (x10^6)
What does 1 atm (atmosphere) equal in Pascal
1 atm = 101325 Pa
What does 1 bar equal in pascals
100k Pa (100,000Pa)
What must you remember to do after calculating the volume using the ideal gas equation
X by 1000 to get to dm 3 (the answer comes out in m3)
When collecting the volume of gas using the trough method in the following reaction: Calcium carbonate + ethanoic acid —> calcium ethanoate + water + carbon dioxide Why might the volume of CO2 collected be lower than expected? Give some solutions to the problem
CO2 is slightly soluble in water - add a pinch of calcium carbonate before starting reaction to saturate the water with carbon dioxide Gas lost as bing is put on too slowly - to minimise this, place solid reactants upright in a tube in conical flask. Put on the bung, then shake
