Photosynthesis
The process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar
Light Reaction
The first stage of the photosynthesis process in which solar energy is converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP
Dark Reaction
light-independent process in which sugar molecules are formed from the carbon dioxide and water molecules
Choroplast
small, but critical structures inside of plant cells
Chlorophyll
a pigment present in all green plants and a few other organisms
Autotrouph
an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals
Heterotroph
an organism that eats other plants or animals for energy and nutrients
Thylakoid
the site of photochemical or light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis
Stroma
the space between thylakoids where the dark reaction takes place
ATP Energy
the source of energy for use and storage at the cellular level
Gluecose
a sugar that plants produce
Xylem
the part of the stem that transports water to the plant
Phloem
part of the stem that transports nutrients to the plant
Guard Cells
control the opening and closing of pores (called stoma, or stomata), thereby regulating gas exchange and water loss for the plant
Stomata
to take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen
Glucose Equation
C6H12O6
Oxygen Equation
O6
Water Equation
H2O
Carbon Dioxide Equation
CO2
