What do microscopes allow us to do?
• see things we can’t see with the naked eye
What do light microscopes do?
• use light and lenses to form an image of a specimen and magnify it • let us see individual cell and large subcellular structures like nuclei
What do electron microscopes do?
• use electrons to form an image • have a higher resolution • give a sharper image • let us see smaller things in more detail like internal structures of subcellular structures (or smaller ones)
What two lenses does a light microscope have?
• objective lens • eyepiece lens
What does the objective lens do?
• produce a magnified image
What does an eyepiece lens do?
• magnify the magnified image and direct it into the eye
What does the resolving power affect?
• the resolution • the ability to distinguish between two points
What does a lower resolution power mean?
• less detail is seen
How do you calculate magnification?
• magnification = image size / real size
What is useful when using a smaller objects length?
• write length/numbers in standard form
