What is the equipment list for a titration practical?
• Burette • Volumetric Pipette • Pipette Filler • Conical Flask • White Tile • Funnel • Single-Change Indicator • Acid (HCl) • Base (NaOH) • Distilled Water
What is the method for a titration practical?
• Wash burette with distilled water • Wash burette with HCl • Fill burette with HCl and open tap to fill jet completely • Record initial volume to 2 d.p (0 for meniscus on line, 0 for meniscus between) • Measure a 25cm³ aliquot of NaOH • Add 3 to 4 drops of indicator (turns yellow) • Slowly add acid and swirl conical flask • Record final volume to 2 d.p • Repeat until you have concordant results (± 0.2cm³)
What must you include in a diagram of a titration practical?
• Burette • Clamp • HCl labelled • Conical Flask • NaOH + Methyl Orange labelled • White Tile • Volumetric Pipette
How to find concentration of an unknown substance using titration?
• Write balanced symbol equation • Calculate moles of known (C=M/V) remembering to convert from cm³ to dm³ • Use molar ration to find moles of unknown • Uses moles and volume of unknown to find concentration (divide the moles by the titre converted to dm³)
What is the aim of a titration practical?
To titrate a strong acid against a strong alkali and find the concentration of the acid using an appropriate indicator
What is the hazards, risks and ways to reduce them in a titration practical?
HCl, NaOH and Methyl Orange - Irritant, Skin and Eye Irritation, Lab Coat, Goggles, Wash off skin Volumetric Pipette and Glassware - Cuts and injury with pipette, Handle with care, Do not hold near bulb
