sagittal plane
divides the body vertically into right and left sections
coronal (frontal) plane
divides the body into front and back (anterior and posterior)
transverse (horizontal) plane
divides body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) halves
medial
• nearer to the midline of the body • little finger is medial to the thumb
lateral
• opposite of medial • away from the mid line • thumb is lateral to little finger
proximal
• closer to the center of the body • hip is proximal to the knee
distal
• away from the center of the body • knee is dital to the hip
anterior
• refers to structures in front
posterior
• refers to structures behind
cephalic/ cephalad
towards the head
ciudad
towards the tail or posterior
superior
• above or closer to the head
inferior
• below or closer to the feet
abdominal quadrants
• divided into four quadrants to help identify position of organs
right upper quadrant
transverse and ascending colon liver gall bladder pancreas head right kidney right adrenal gland
right lower quadrant
appendix right ureter right fallopian tube right ovary
left upper quadrant
stomach pancreas (body) left kidney spleen part of transverse and descending colon
left lower quadrant
left ureter left fallopian tube left ovary sigmoid colon
ventral cavity
comprises of the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities - located at the front (anterior) of the human body
thoracic cavity
• located above the diaphgram • contains the lungs and mediastinum which separates the cavity into left and right compartments • heart trachea esophagus and thymus gland lie within the mediastinum
abdominopelvic cavity
• below the diaphragm to the pelvic floor • contains upper abdominal cavity and lower pelvic cavity • abdominal cavity includes the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, large and small intestines • pelvic cavity contains internal reproductive organs, the bladder and the distal part of the large intestine
parietal pleura
membrane lining the thoracic cavities
pericardial membrane
lines the heart holds the heart in place pericardial cavity contains pericardial fluid that reduces friction
peritoneal membrane
lines the abdominopelvic cavity
