Cells
Basic structure and functional units of an organism
Tissues
Group of similar cells that perform a special function
Organs
• composed of two or more different tissues and have specific functions
Homeostasis
Condition of equilibrium (stability or balance) in the body’s internal environment
Superior
Towards head
Inferior
Away from head
Anterior (ventral)
Front of the body
Posterior (dorsal)
Read of body
Superficial
On/near surface of body or organ
Deep
further away from the surface of body or organ
Medial
Nearer to the midline of the body
Lateral
Further from the midline of the body
Proximal
Nearer the attachment of the limb to the trunk
Distal
Further from the attachment of the limb to the trunk
Central
Towards the body core, usually the head and trunk
Peripheral
Towards the body peripheries or extremities
Integumentary system consists of
Skin, hair, nails and glands
Function of the integumentary system
• regulation of temperature - protection
Skeletal system consists of
Bones, ligaments, joints
Function of the skeletal system
• protects and supports body organs - provides a framework muscles use to cause movement
Muscular system consists of
Smooth muscles, cardiac muscles and skeletal muscles
Function of the muscular system
• participate with skeletal system to facilitate movement & maintain posture • generates heat necessary for warm blooded organisms to maintain a constant body temp
Nervous system consists of
Brain, spinal cord, nerves, sensory organs
Nervous system function
Detects and responds to the body’s internal & external changes by activating muscles & glands through nerve impulses
