#1
Front (Question)

Solvent

Back (Answer)

A liquid in which the solute dissolves

#2
Front (Question)

Solute

Back (Answer)

Soluble substance which dissolves

#3
Front (Question)

Solution

Back (Answer)

A mixture of a solute dissolved in a solvent

#4
Front (Question)

Insoluble

Back (Answer)

A substance that will not dissolve in a particular solvent

#5
Front (Question)

Saturated solution

Back (Answer)

A solution in which no more solid will dissolved at a particular temperature

#6
Front (Question)

What happens when a saturated solution is heated then cooled?

Back (Answer)

Some of the solute will be deposited

#7
Front (Question)

Solubility

Back (Answer)

The mass of solid that will saturate 100g water/solvent at a particular temperature

#8
Front (Question)

Calculation for solubility

Back (Answer)

Mass of solute/ mass of solvent x 100

#9
Front (Question)

What happens to solids’ solubility when temperature is increased?

Back (Answer)

Solubility also increases

#10
Front (Question)

What happens to gases’ solubility when temperature is increased?

Back (Answer)

Solubility decreases

#11
Front (Question)

How do you draw a solubility graph?

Back (Answer)

Temperature on x axis (oC), solubility on y axis (g/100g), draw a curved line to connect the points

#12
Front (Question)

EXPERIMENT how do you determine the solubility of a solid?

Back (Answer)

• 10cm3 of water in boiling tube • Add sodium chloride and stir until excess is present • Decant saturated solution into a weighed evaporating basin • Weigh basin with solution inside • Evaporate until it starts to spit • Complete drying over water bath. To ensure drying is complete, heat and weigh until there is no change in mass. By finding the solute and solvent mass using these results we can figure out the solubility of the solid
