#1
Front (Question)

What is the formula for rate of reaction?

Back (Answer)

Rate = Δ quantity / Δ time Δ = delta (meaning “change in”)

#2
Front (Question)

What is the term mole(M) used for?

Back (Answer)

To identify a solutions concentration

#3
Front (Question)

Is 1 Mol l -1 bigger in concentration than 2 Mol l -1?

Back (Answer)

No, the bigger the number the higher the concentration

#4
Front (Question)

What is a catalyst?

Back (Answer)

Catalysts allow chemical reactions to take place at a lower temperature, and saves energy and money because of it. They also increase the rate of reaction. + they don’t change the end result of the experiment just the speed

#5
Front (Question)

What group are catalyst normally apart of?

Back (Answer)

Transition metals

#6
Front (Question)

If doing an experiment and the outcome come is oxygen how would you prove that oxygen came off?

Back (Answer)

If it relights a glowing splint

#7
Front (Question)

What variables can effect results in an experiment?

Back (Answer)

Temperature Volume Surface area Concentration Mass Presence of a catalyst Etc…

#8
Front (Question)

What term is used for catalysts found in plants or animals?

Back (Answer)

Enzymes

#9
Front (Question)

What components can effect the rate of reaction in an experiment?

Back (Answer)

Concentration Temperature Surface area / particle size Presence of a Catalysts

#10
Front (Question)

How does concentration affect the rate of reaction?

Back (Answer)

If the concentration of a substance increases, there are more particles present. This resluts in more collisions taking place, which makes the reaction faster

#11
Front (Question)

How does temperature effect the rate of reaction?

Back (Answer)

Increasing temperature un an experiment increases the energy of the particles, making them move faster and react faster.

#12
Front (Question)

How does particle size effect the rate of reaction?

Back (Answer)

The smaller the particle size, the greater the surface area, resulting in faster reactions. And the larger the particle size, the smaller the surface area and so the reactions are slower

#13
Front (Question)

Why is the rate of reaction faster at the start of an experiment?

Back (Answer)

Because the reactant hasn’t been used up yet so there is less of it and therefore as it gets used more it loses mass and slows the reaction to a halt when it is used up fully

#14
Front (Question)

Why would mass decrease as the reaction proceeds if producing a gas?

Back (Answer)

As the gas is produced it starts escaping from the container it’s in and that container then loses the mass of what was used to make the gas and the mass of the gas that was made

#15
Front (Question)

How do you find the units of a rate of reaction question?

Back (Answer)

If given what units both the mass and time is in you would put it after your answer like “mass” per “time” (e.g. if the mass was grams and time was minutes then the units would be g min -1)

#16
Front (Question)

How do you tell when something is a chemical reaction and when something Isnt?

Back (Answer)

If there is no chemical change or reaction then there is no chemical reaction like when sugar dissolves in water it Isnt a chemical reaction as it’s only a physical change because the sugar particles simply blend with the water instead of having a reaction and the chemical structure is unchanged

#17
Front (Question)

How do you follow the course of a reaction?

Back (Answer)

Two of the most common ways of monitoring the course of reaction are by either measuring the volume of gas produced or measuring the loss of mass over a period of time

#18
Front (Question)

Are catalysts used up in a reaction?

Back (Answer)

No, it is unchanged by whatever it is used on and stays the same at the start as when the reaction is complete

#19
Front (Question)

Why is a gas syringe used when collecting gas instead of a measuring cylinder?

Back (Answer)

The measuring cylinder cannot be used to collect a soluble(dissolves in liquid/solvent) gas because it would just mix with the water instead of separating from it and pushing it out of the measuring cylinder

#20
Front (Question)

What does the term soluble mean?

Back (Answer)

Dissolves in liquid/solvent

#21
Front (Question)

What does the term solvent mean?

Back (Answer)

Something to dissolve other substances/the solute to form a solution

#22
Front (Question)

What does the term solute mean?

Back (Answer)

Something dissolved in a solvent

#23
Front (Question)

What is the point on a graph where the line flattens out called?

Back (Answer)

The end point, when the reaction has stopped it flatlines and is deemed this.

#24
Front (Question)

What is an example of concentrations effects on reactions?

Back (Answer)

Chalk reacts faster with more concentrated acid
