What is the hierarchy of life?
Cell, tissues, organ, organ system, organism
What is the difference between atoms, molecules, and compounds
Atom: Smallest unit of matter. Molecule: 2 or more atoms together that are same or different (e.g. H2, O2) Compound: 2 atoms that are both different (H2O).
What makes something a living thing?
• One or more cell • Contains similar chemical and energy use • Responds to surroundings (Homeostasis) • Grow, develop, and reproduce
What is homeostasis?
Maintaining a stable internal condition
What are the 2 types of homeostasis?
Involuntary - an automatic response of your body. Voluntary - under your control.
What are the different processes for material transport?
Active Transport - energy required Exocytosis - the process by which particles are surrounded and expelled from the cell Endocytosis - particles are surrounded and drawn into the cell Passive Transport - no energy When molecules from a higher concentration area move to a lower concentration area (When the molecules are water it is called osmosis)
