Transcription stage 1
Transcription occurs in the nucleus. RNA polymerase moves along DNA unwinding the RNA and breaking hydrogen bonds between the bases
Transcription stage 2
Free RNA nucleotides pair with their complementary DNA bases - a+u g+c
Transcription stage 3
RNA polymerase creates a primary mRNA transcript containing introns and exons. Only one gene in transcribed to form mRNA - so the primary mRNA only codes for one protein
Transcription stage 4
Introns (non coding regions) are removed from the primary mRNA leaving only exons (coding regions) to form the mature mRNA transcript. This process is called splicing. The order of exons remain unchanged during splicing
Transcription stage 5
Different proteins can be expressed from one gene, as a result of alternative RNA splicing. Different mature mRNA transcripts are produced from the same primary transcript depending on which exons are retained
