Dependent variable
The observation/response to the change you made. Ask: What changed because of the independent variable?
Independent variable
The variable you are changing in an experiment. Ask: What has been changed?
Control group
all of the variables in the control group are the same as the experimental group, except it doesn’t have the independent variable.
Experimental group
has all of the same variables as the control group, except it does have the independent variable.
what makes a controlled experiment a controlled experiment (Know the parts of a controlled experiment)
A controlled experiment is controlled because nothing is changed except for ONE thing (Independent variable)
dependent vs. independent (Know the parts of a controlled experiment)
Dependent variable-The observation/response to the change you made. Ask: What changed because of the independent variable? Independent variable-The variable you are changing in an experiment. Ask: What has been changed?
experimental vs. control groups (Know the parts of a controlled experiment)
Control group-all of the variables in the control group are the same as the experimental group, except it doesn’t have the independent variable. Experimental group-has all of the same variables as the control group, except it does have the independent variable.
What are the steps of the scientific method? (Know the steps of the scientific method)
• Make an observation and ask questions • Form a hypothesis (If, then statement) • Design a CONTROLLED experiment to test the hypothesis • Collect data • Analyze data
What are the characteristics of life? Know the characteristics of life
• Made of cells • Reproduces • Responds to the environment -Stimuli • Maintains internal balance -Homeostasis • Changes over time -Evolution • Grows and develops • Contains DNA • Uses energy
How many steps are in the scientific method?
5
How many characteristics of life are there?
8
Quantitative vs. qualitative data
Quantitative data is numerical data Ex. height of grass (#) Qualitative data is descriptive data Ex. description of the gras
Hypothesis vs. theory
Hypothesis-a testable observation/question Theory-an explanation for why or how something is happening that is backed up by many hypotheses and evidence.
Importance of peer review
Peer review is important because: -It gives you a different viewpoint -Have someone fact check your work -Additional information -To make sure your paper is unbiased -Check your math
metric system-why scientists use it
-Every scientist is using it worldwide so this makes data consistent. -Easy conversions -More precise in our measurements -Precision refers to how close measurements of the same item are.
metric system-the units
Length: Meters (m) Mass: Grams (g) Volume: Liters (L) Time: Seconds (s) Temperature: Celsius (℃)
