what is biodiversity?
the number and variety of organisms in a particular ecosystem
why do we measure biodiversity?
higher biodiversity = better sustainability
what are 4 benefits to biodiversity?
• high ecosystem sustainability • new material / new medicine • enjoy the nature • inspire people
what 3 things does biodiversity focus on?
• numbers (# of species) • evenness (population distribution) • difference (genetic or behavioural diversity)
what is a biodiversity hotspot?
a place where there is an exceptionally large number of species in a relatively small area
what 2 things lead to habitat change / habitat loss?
• deforestation - constructing farms, housing, roads or dams
what 2 things lead to overexploitation?
• overhunting / overfishing - too much demand on water
what 3 things lead to pollution?
• increase level of carbon dioxide • use of fertilizers • use of pesticides
what 2 things lead to invasive species?
• imports or shipments of goods from other countries - pets released into the wild
what can lead to climate change?
global warming
what 2 things can lead to extinction?
• natural selection of nature - arrival of humans change abiotic / biotic features of an ecosystem
