What is the purpose of RAM in a computer system?
RAM (Random Access Memory): It stores data and instructions that are currently in use, allowing quick access for the CPU. It is volatile memory.
What is the purpose of ROM in a computer system?
ROM (Read Only Memory): It stores the boot strap which is the initial start-up instructions. It is non-volatile.
Is RAM volatile or non-volatile?
Volatile — data is lost when power is off.
Is ROM volatile or non-volatile?
Non-volatile — retains data when power is off.
Can data be written to RAM?
Yes — data can be read from and written to RAM.
Can data be written to ROM?
No — it is usually written during manufacturing and not changed during normal use.
How is RAM used in mobile devices?
RAM temporarily holds apps and processes that are currently in use to ensure smooth performance.
Why is ROM important in embedded systems?
ROM stores firmware which is needed for the basic functioning of embedded systems, such as in washing machines or routers.
What happens if a system doesn’t have enough RAM?
It slows down as it may need to use slower virtual memory on disk.
Why can’t ROM be used as RAM?
ROM cannot be written to easily and does not support the quick, repeated read/write cycles needed during program execution.
