Help trigger fight or flight. Located on top of kidneys
What do hormones do
• Only affect target cells • Cells have receptors for that hormones • Too much/little can result in dysfunctions
Two main parts of the adrenal glands
Anterior and Posterior and the cortex and medulla
Anterior glands
Release ACTH as a response to stress. ACTH stimulates adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Also release FSH and LH - stimulate ovaries and testes
Posterior glands
Posterior releases oxytocin - stimulates contraction of ovaries during childbirth
Elabd
found oxytocin is needed for healthy maintenance and repair in rats
Hormones produced by adrenal glands
• Adrenal cortex produces cortisol • Cortisol production in increased with stress • Cortex produced aldosterone • Medulla releases adrenaline and noradrenaline
