Card preview (24)
Reabsorption
the process of absorbing something again
Filtration
the action/process of filtering something
Urine
A fluid containing water and waste products
Synapse
A junction at which a neuron can transfer an impulse to another through diffusion
Neurotransmitter
The body’s chemical messengers, acting as signals that transmit information across the nervous System
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Consists of the brain and spinal cord, acting as the body’s primary control center
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
A vast network of nerves outside the brain and spinal cord that connects the CNS
Sensory Neurons
Neurons that receives a signal from the environment
Motor Neuron
Neurons that connect to muscles or glands
Interneuron
The nerve between sensory and motor neurons that inergrates, processes, and passes on information between both neurons
How does a signal move through a neuron?
moves from dendrite -> cell body -> axon
Dendrites
Receives signal from environment or another neuron
Cell Body
Stores the nucleus, essential organelles, and cytoplasm
Axon
Long skinny part that carries signal away from the cell body
Reflex
An automatic response that doesn’t require to think or make a decision about
Why does reflexes act so quickly?
The signal only goes to the spinal chord
Nervous System
helps perceive and respond to internal & external environments, Maintains homeostasis
Nerve Impulse
Activates when a neuron is stimulated by another neuron or by the environment through an electrochemical
Nerve Impulse Process
Nerve impulse arrives at an axon terminal which the vesicle releases a protein into the gap between the two neurons triggering a response in the next neuron
Nerve Impulse Results
Causes a new impulse on the next neuron
What are the weak points of the nervous system?
Any substance that affects neurotransmitters or mimics affects of the nerve function (gas, mood altering drugs, depressants, etc.)
What are some Neurotransmitter examples?
Acetylcholine, epinephrine, dopamine, serotonin
Why are neurotransmitters vulnerable?
They rely on delicate, high-demand chemical processes
In what ways can a neurotransmitters be disrupted?
enzyme imbalances, rapid re-absorption, damage to the synaptic clef
