Card preview (8)

#1
Front (Question)

Define a Core

Back (Answer)

A core is a complete processing unit within the CPU

#2
Front (Question)

What components does a core contain

Back (Answer)

CU - Control Unit ALU - Arithmetic Logic Unit Registers - MDR, MAR, PC, ACC, CIR

#3
Front (Question)

Define ALU

Back (Answer)

The decision part of the core. It performs subtraction, addition, division, multiplications, and comparisons in order to arrive at decisions

#4
Front (Question)

Define CU

Back (Answer)

Controls data flow and coordinates and controls all of the operations carried out by the computer and decodes instructions

#5
Front (Question)

How many cores can a CPU have

Back (Answer)

up to 24

#6
Front (Question)

Define Cache

Back (Answer)

High speed memory built into a processor to store instructions and data that the processor is likely to resuse. It is able to transfer data faster than RAM.

#7
Front (Question)

Define Von Neuman Architecture

Back (Answer)

Uses the stored program concept where instructions and data are loaded from main memory into the processor to be executed

#8
Front (Question)

Explain the FDE cycle

Back (Answer)

FDE cycle consists of 3 steps Step 1: FETCH The value in the PC is copied to the MAR. Using the address in the MAR, data is fetched from main memory and stored in the MDR. The PC is incremented Step 2: DECODE The instruction in the MDR is decoded by the control unit into an operator and operand Step 3: Execute The instruction is performed. If the instruction involves a calculation or logic operation then the ALU is responsible for this
