What is motivation
the direction and intensity of one’s effort The direction of effort is if a person is attracted to a situation. I will try hard to get on the dance but could not care less about trying to bre on the swim team. Intensity of effort describes the amount of effort an athlete exerts
Intrinsic motivation
Comes from within like excitment, fun enjoyment and the chance to improve skills This is seen as more sustainable long term.
Factors affecting motivation
Direction (choosing a specific goal or sport), persistence (continuing despite setbacks), continuing motivation (long term commitment), intensity, and performance (execution quality of sports skills and strategies)
Extrinsic motivation
Etrensic is external so trophies fame prizes praise and status it is seen as less sustainable stemming from “I have to do it”
What type of motivation outputs the best performance
a mix of intrinsic and extrisnic it pushes to achieve external goals while still having the internal motivation actually to do it and enjoy doing it.
Need achievement theory
Motivation is a balance between the motivation to achieve sucsess and the motive to avoid failure.
What impacts the need achievement theory
emotions (either being proud of sucsess or having shame of failing), Result tendicies (do you go in wanting to sucseed or not wanting to fail), personality factors (are they more scared to fail or want to achieve), situational factors (dificulty of task etc)
Tendincies of low achievers
Avoid challenging activities out of fear of failing, exert less effort when they do take part, exert ess persistence when they participate, focus on the shame of failure.
Tendincies of a high achiever
They will choose harder tasks, dispaly high effort, try hard in difficult situations, focus on the pride that comes with sucsess
Task oriented person
focus on doing the task correctly and improving and mastering skills, selects challenging tasks, evaluates themselves and there performance to have high focus and improvement
Goal orientation theory
In general when given an opportunity to achieve people want to show they can do it not that they lack in it people want to look good not bad
ego oriented people
Focus on being better than others and winning, worries about what others think, selects easier tasks, quits in difficulty
IN the goal orientation theory what three factors combine to determine motivation
achievement goals, perceived ability ( this affects ego more than task people), achievement behaviour
What does the goal orientation theory highlight
the importance of understanding the underlying reasons why people try to persue their goals. Different goal orientations can result in different behaviours and motivations for achievement. That doesnt mean they can only have one though multiple can occur simultaniously
Need to ahcieve person
enjoys challenge effiicent takes risks tries to improve takes responsibility
Need to avoid failure person
easily disuaded from taking a challenge, avoids responsibility, dont like to be judged or now how they have been assesed, avoids situations wehre there ego is put at risk , gives up after failure, blames external factors for loss
Resultant achievement behaviour
The balance between need to achieve and need to avoid failure which determines behaviour
Self determination theory
explains the continuous motivation between intrinsic and extrinsic.
What are the three psychological needs in the self determination theory
autonomy (feeling like you are in control of your own life), comptence (feeling capable and effective in your actions), and relatedness (the need to feel connected and have a sense of belonging i feel wanted) these all underline motivation and wellbeing
When is intrinsic motivation and a motivation likely to occur in the self determination theory
if one feels competent, autonomous, and related. But when these needa are not met individuals may feel a motivation or lack of motivation and thereofre may be more reliant on external motivation and rewards to stay motivated
How can you support autonomy competnence and relatedness
Automny - allow athletes to have input in training choose drills set goals etc make them have some ownership, comptence - provide appriate challanged and feedback that is constructive to build confidence in their ability challenges not too hard. Relatedness - create a supportive team enviroment where everyone feels valued and connected with eachother
Extrisnic regulation
Comptetly driven by external forces
introjected regulation
participating to avoid negative feelings like guilt and shame
what is motivational climate
factors that influence how people see their skills and ability and what goals they choose to set and pursue
