Atom definition
Smallest unit of matter, mass concentrated in the centre, overall charge 0.
Isotope definition
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons. (Physical properties different)
Ion definition
A charged molecule formed when atoms lose or gain electrons.
Relative atomic mass definition
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared to 1/12 the mass of a C-12 atom.
Relative isotopic mass (Ar) definition
The mass of the isotope compared to 1/12 the mass of a C-12 atom. (always whole numbers)
What is the formula for Ar?
Ar = the sum of (% abundance x relative isotopic mass) for all isoptopes ÷ the sum of % abundances
What are the x and y axis for the mass spectrometry of elements?
Y - relative abundance. X - m/z.
What does the weighted mean mass actually mean?
It is the average mass, taking into account the relative abundances of the isotopes.
